This sculpture is an homage to the native ancestors, “the first Americans”, of North American Natives. The history of the North American Indian has been kept alive orally by the Hopi. Frank Water’s “The Book of the Hopi”, describes his attempt to write down the history that has been told and passed through generations for ten thousand years. The First American is a tribute to those ancestors who crossed from Siberia to Alaska. This monumental sculpture is 8’6” tall and 12’ circumference, hand carved from a Claro Walnut tree harvested from the front yard of a house in Chico, CA. The burl is estimated to be about 75 years old.
